Artist Overview
Actor Billy Bob Thornton had already made his mark in music with four dark, moody albums as a singer/songwriter before he started The Boxmasters. With the band, Thornton's sound took on a honky-tonk/Bakersfield country direction, while his lyrics retained their bite but added some black humor. The Boxmasters' self-titled debut album appeared in 2008--the double-disc was made up of one-half original tunes and one-half smartly chosen covers of songs by everyone from Michael Nesmith to Lee Clayton. After a brief detour for a country Christmas record, the band released MODBILLY in 2009, which featured a similar half-originals/half-covers format.
