Idaho-born Josh Ritter's deep, expressive, but never melodramatic voice recalls such understated singers as Leonard Cohen, and his traditional and often acoustic-based songcraft parallels the best confessional folk and pop singers of the 1970s. Though the songwriter got his start in the States, a series of early '00s gigs supporting the Irish band the Frames in their home country led to widespread popularity and chart action there.
