Squarepusher Music
Artist Overview
Prolific British musician Tom Jenkinson (a.k.a. Squarepusher) creates dazzling electronica built around not only his imaginative use of circuitry and found sounds, but his virtuosic musicianship (especially drums and bass) and compositional skills. Jenkinson's music often eschews melodic hooks for intricate polyrhythms and challenging harmonic excursions, like some next wave of jazz. His first album was released in 1996 on Rephlex, the label of Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), who became a close friend and mentor. Though his first few recordings fit rather neatly in the jungle/acid slot, each subsequent one has revealed more and more of Jenkinson's unique, jazz-inflected style.
