Artist Overview
An anomaly within the hard rock scene of the mid-to-late 1980s, Boston's Extreme added a funky, chops-heavy element to their take on guitar-fueled hair metal. Led by lead singer Gary Cherone and virtuoso guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, the band released several albums before scoring a monster hit with the acoustic power ballad "More Than Words." The uncharacteristically tender song remains the band's best-known to this day. In 1997 Cherone took over lead vocal duties in Van Halen, appearing on one album, while Bettencourt released the solo album SCHIZOPHRENIC the same year. The band reunited several times in the ensuing years, and Bettencourt briefly spent time in Perry Ferrel's Satellite Party in the early 2000s.
