SLR = Single Lens Reflex. This is a certain type of camera that allows the user to see through the lens (exactly what the lens sees) for precise accuity. Cameras that are not SLR's use a viewfinder that merely approximates the image that the camera lens might see. Because the SLR provides a true perspective of what the lens sees, there are additional advantages offered. You can change lenses on most SLR cameras allowing you to select alternate perspectives to suit your particular photo project. This versatility makes the SLR the chosen camera-type among professional photographers. SLR's may be sold as a body-only (no lens included) or as a kit (with a manufacturer selected lens). Lenses must be compatible for use on a particular manufacturer's body. This means Nikon or Nikon compatible lenses may only be used with a Nikon SLR camera body. Likewise for Minolta, Canon, Pentax, Yashica, Olympus, etc
