Notes: The Emerson Quartet applies its technical wizardry and trademark intensity to the fiercely individual music of Leos Janacek. Janacek composed both of his string quartets in the last decade of his life, a period that witnessed a rush of creativity that was largely inspired by the intense, though long- unrequited, passion Janacek felt for a married, and much younger, acquaintance. The first quartet ("Kreutzer Sonata") sublimated his ardor in a narrative taken from Tolstoy's novella of the same name. The second quartet ("Intimate Letters") was dedicated to his muse, and was written in the last year of the composer's life, when their relationship had finally attained a degree of reciprocity. The quartet pungently chronicles their relationship, from Janacek's protracted longings to the belated felicity of a more intimate liaison. The music is marked by sharp dissonances, frequently migrating tonal centers, jagged rhythms, modality, and sharp bursts of interrupted melody. The composer influenced many 20th century composers, among them his much younger contemporary, Bohuslav Martinu. Martinu's renaissance-inspired piece "Three Madrigals," for violin and viola, reflects his enduring fascination with the period.
