Holst was passionate about his composition for the voice, and his work has a compelling quality, difficult to miss in these compositions. Beginning with the ethereal sounds of 'The Cloud Messenger,' Holst's affinity for sacred themes is received as real and deeply rooted. 'The Hymn of Jesus' is an intense work, uniquely original and forward-looking. The colors of Holst's voices are no less than the colors found in his orchestral pieces, and Richard Hickox seizes upon them. 'Seven Partsongs' is a striking set of short pieces, as is 'Four Partsongs'. Rachel Wheatly stands out in "This have I done for my true love." After hearing these pieces, one will forever understand Holst as a choral composer, not simply the writer of 'The Planets.' This is a two-CD set rich in interest, color, and passionate focus by the performers, which allow the listener passage into the vocal reflections of a talented composer. |
