Written: 1900 Country: Italy Language: Italian Length - 4 min 31 sec Studio / Live: Studio Conductor - Ensemble: Sinopoli, Giuseppe - Philharmonia Orchestra Performers: Domingo, Placido - Tenor Notes: Puccini may have been the most successful composer of all time. Certainly, no other composer ever gathered such wealth and fame in his lifetime. And Puccini's box-office appeal has, if anything, gotten stronger in ensuing generations, with a half dozen of his operas still in regular rotation in major houses throughout the world. This generous greatest-hits collection features the most popular arias and a couple of duets from Puccini's six blockbusters, in recordings culled from the catalogs of Decca and DG. Fortunately for the collector, those performances, featuring soprano Mirella Freni and tenor Placido Domingo with conductors Herbert von Karajan and Giuseppi Sinopoli, represent the cream of the Puccini discography and could hardly be bettered. So listeners looking for a one-disc anthology of Puccini need look no further. |
