Sergei Nakariakov is a simply astounding twenty-three year old trumpeter whose only limitation may be the small number of solo works for his instrument. Some things work better in transcription than others, and while you'd never miss the violin in the Saint-Sans you might not be as content with a flugelhorn in the Tchaikovsky Andante cantabile no matter how warm and caressing Nakariakov makes it sound. Happily, this is not a concern in most of the program, which concludes with a brash and unusually modulated arrangement of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' that amusingly bridges Gorky and Tin Pan Alley to ripping good effect. |
