Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) recruits Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas) to become his replacement as Zorro, the legendary hero. Together, they infiltrate the circle of Don Raphael - the fiercest of the Spanish tyrants. Armed with his mask, sword, whip and jet-black stallion, Tornado, the new Zorro embarks on a mission to stop Don Raphael's plot to buy California, set right 20 years of wrongs, bring justice to the people ensnared by Spanish greed, and win the heart of Don Diego's daughter, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones in a star-making performance). THE MASK OF ZORRO is an old-fashioned swashbuckler with plenty of modern sizzle thanks to the casting of Banderas and then-newcomer Zeta-Jones.
Cast:
"...Banderas cuts a sexy romantic figure....The stunts are a kick..."
-- Peter Travers
, (Rolling Stone)
"...Delightful....THE MASK OF ZORRO boasts one of the very best incarnations of the character in Antonio Banderas..." -- Jose Arroyo , (Sight and Sound) "...A refreshing throwback that's also thoroughly modern....Rollicks with an exuberance we've rarely seen....Triumphs because it stays true to the pulp serial..." -- Rating: A- -- Michael Sauter , (Entertainment Weekly) "...A wealth of charismatic Zorros, a smashing heroine and a dauntless love of adventure....[Hopkins acts] with unexpectedly elegant panache....Ms. Zeta-Jones makes her first major film role one to remember..." -- Janet Maslin , (New York Times) "...The casting is great. Hopkins, Banderas and Zeta-Jones all look the part and breathe life and passion into their roles....The whole movie is directed with style, aplomb and a good deal of tongue-in-cheek humor....Quite refreshing..." -- Lisa Osborne , (Box Office) "...It's the campy sense of humor, reminiscent of THE PRINCESS BRIDE, that makes this film a cut above the rest..." -- Sean M. Smith , (Premiere) "...It's the kind of pleasant entertainment that allows the paying customer to have as much fun as the people on screen..." -- Kenneth Turan , (Los Angeles Times) |
