In WHAT'S COOKING, British director Gurinder Chadha takes a step back from her own Indian heritage to explore the cultural, familial, and social traditions of four very different families, each celebrating Thanksgiving in Los Angeles. The families--one African American, one Latino, one Jewish, and one Vietnamese--differ in the ways that they interact, the ways that they celebrate, and, of course, in what's cooking on the stove. A hit at Sundance 2000, WHAT'S COOKING is a rich and intelligent film that features a stellar cast, including Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgwick, Mercedes Ruehl, Alfre Woodard, and Lanie Kazan.
Cast:
"...[It] triumphs....Chadha successfully leads a large, vibrant cast..."
-- Stephen Farber
, (Movieline's Hollywood Life)
"...Ms. Chanda makes [the stories] feel surprisingly rich and dense....[You'll] walk away stuffed and happy..." -- A. O. Scott , (New York Times) "...Chadha's dialogue flows easily and rings true....Superb performances....Chadha melds comedy and tragedy so masterfully that one's laughing at and crying for the characters simultaneously..." -- 4 out of 5 stars -- Annlee Ellingson , (Box Office) "...The direction is as sensual as the camerawork. Chadha's style is big and generous..." -- Bonnie Grier , (Sight and Sound) "...Lovingly shot....A comic exploration of the melting pot that is the City of Angels....[With] strong performances..." -- Tom Dawson , (Total Film) "...A sure-fire winner, an endlessly inventive serious comedy....For so brisk and entertaining a film, sharp in its observations but light in its touch, COOKING has unexpected substance and is a formidable accomplishment..." -- Kevin Thomas , (Los Angeles Times) "...There are so many characters, so vividly drawn, with such humor and life..." -- Roger Ebert , (Chicago Sun-Times) "[T]he warmth and nourishment of family life is the winner here." -- David Stubbs , (Uncut)
