A fire and brimstone morality tale similar to that of Dante's INFERNO, JAPANESE HELL () uses didacticism as an excuse for inventive torture scenes and gore effects. Rika is a young girl who has gotten enveloped in the activities of a bizarre cult. One day she is approached by a mysterious old woman and a boy, who lead her on a tour of the horrors of hell. Using real-life cases that shocked the nation, JIGOKU presents the stories of terrible actions that are severely punished in the afterlife, including one modeled on the Aum Shinrikyo sect that poisoned the Tokyo subway in 1994. JAPANESE HELL features garish production design and creative special effects and makeup to deliver a warning about moral decline.
