Stephen Frears, director of THE QUEEN and HIGH FIDELITY, continues to demonstrate his genre-defying talent with this adaptation of a Colette novel. Set in Paris in the years before World War I, CHERI paints a picture of the romance between young Chri (Rupert Friend) and retired courtesan La (Michelle Pfeiffer). Chris mother (Kathy Bates), a rival of La, plots to separate the pair by arranging a marriage between her son and Edme (Felicity Jones). Screenwriter Christopher Hampton previously collaborated with the director on DANGEROUS LIAISONS.
Cast:
4 stars out of 5 -- "[The film] works with all the joie de vivre and effervescent bubbles of vintage champagne....Hampton's lines, many of which come directly from Colette, are a joy to hear -- barbed and acerbic witticisms that speak volumes..."
-- Richard Mowe
, (Box Office)
"This is a deft, clever adaptation by director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Christopher Hampton of Colette's CHERI novellas, with a commanding star turn by Michelle Pfeiffer..." -- Phillip Lopate , (Film Comment) "As they did with LIAISONS, Frears and Hampton have a ball with their sources scandalous boudoir politics..." -- Zinat S. , (Movieline) 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "It is fascinating to observe how Pfeiffer controls her face and voice during times of painful hurt....The cinematography by Darius Khondji and costumes by Consolata Boyce are meticulous in evoking decadence." -- Roger Ebert , (Chicago Sun-Times) "[Pfeiffer delivers a] languorously nuanced performance as a striking beauty....The film is a sumptuous, handsome portrait of a woman poised fearfully on the brink of decline, yet too proud to grab at rescue." -- Tasha Robinson , (A.V. Club) "As shot by the expert Darius Khondji, CHERI makes the most of its real-life French locations and settings....Pfeiffer and Friend also have excellent on-screen chemistry." -- Kenneth Turan , (Los Angeles Times) 3 stars out of 5 -- "With Pfeiffer, 50, radiating uncommon beauty, grace and feeling, Frears uncovers a fragile story's grieving heart." -- Peter Travers , (Rolling Stone) "[T]his November-May romance is set in an elegant Paris during the turn of the last century. The distinctive costumes and ornate belle epoque furnishings are a sumptuous sight." -- Claudia Puig , (USA Today) 3 stars out of 5 -- "Michelle Pfeiffer teases sly pleasures from her [character]....She's sharper than a hairpin." -- Total Film Staff , (Total Film) |
