Unofficially picking up where THE BIG CHILL left off, the ABC series THIRTYSOMETHING chronicles a circle of baby boomers as they cope with life in the 1980s. The "me" decade brings fresh challenges to the young professionals: Hope (Mel Harris) learns to balance her feminist ideals with her role as a stay-at-home mother, while her husband, Michael (Ken Olin), attempts to make it in the advertising business. His partner, Elliot (Timothy Busfield), struggles in the confines of his own marriage to Nancy (Patricia Wettig), a restless homemaker who eventually stares down ovarian cancer. Together with artist friend Melissa (Melanie Mayron), free spirit Ellyn (Polly Draper), and English prof Gary Shepherd (Peter Horton), the couples pull together and fall apart under a variety of pressures and tragedies.
Created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, THIRTYSOMETHING has long been celebrated as a highwater mark in TV drama (the New York Times lovingly deemed it "television of substance"). The series showcases complex personal narratives while staying wary of melodrama. This collection includes every episode from the drama's critically acclaimed first season.
"[I]n dramatizing the mundane, the show became emblematic of a generation, and an indelible influence on future programming..." -- Grade: A
