Performer: Los Tigres del Norte
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: One of the longest-lived and best known Norteno outfits, Los Tigres Del Norte are revered for, among other things, modernizing the tradition of the corrido, a Mexican story-song that usually portrays the trials and tribulations of a character and contains a moral lesson. In particular, Los Tigres Del Norte excel at corrido prohibidos, which center on narratives of illegal activity, usually drug trafficking. 20 CORRIDOS PROHIBIDOS collects the band's best tunes in this mode, making for a veritable Spanish-language short-story collection about outlaws, border crossings, and deals gone wrong. It's a fun ride, especially when supported by the Tigers' fine musicianship and lilting harmonies.
One of the most popular norteno acts of all time, Los Tigres Del Norte formed in the late 1960s and brought a grittier sense of subject matter to the popular genre of border music. While life's hardships were always lyrical fodder for norteno artists, Los Tigres took things a step farther and introduced vivid tales of crime, drug running, and violent betrayals along the border. Musically, the band plays a polished, highly modernized version of a very traditional style of accordion-driven norteno, helping them maintain their appeal through the decades and across generations.
