Notes: Personnel: Khari Crooms, Caitlin Gillead, Tori Jones (background vocals). Additional personnel: Arab, I-15. Propelled by the staggering success of his infectious lead single, "Crank That," the 17-year-old Chicago MC known as Soulja Boy presents his debut album on Collipark Music, SOULJABOYTELLEM.COM. Largely self-produced (Mr. Collipark contributes a few beats), Soulja Boy's first full-length effort is stacked with neck-snapping drum-tracks, zooming synthesizers, and call-and-response hooks that follow "Crank That"'s formula for success. From "Snap and Roll" to "Let Me Get Em" to "Donk" to "Booty Meat," it's clear that Soulja's objective is to put out as many dance-craze anthems as the clubs can handle. Yet, the record's most distinctive departure, and perhaps best track, is "Soulja Girl"--an R&B-driven ballad featuring I-15.
Even more impressive than the phenomenal success of Soulja Boy Tell `Em's single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," which spent seven non-consecutive weeks on the charts at #1, is the grass roots story behind the artist's emergence. Born in Chicago (as DeAndre Ramone Way) and raised in Atlanta and Mississippi, Soulja Boy garnered a sizable following by publishing his home-studio demos on YouTube and MySpace. An independently released album (STILL UNSIGNED AND MAJOR) and a homemade video for "Crank That" led to a deal with Interscope, who released Soulja's second full-length, SOULJABOYTELLEM.COM, in 2007. Soulja Boy's music is steeped in the Dirty South style, drawing heavily from crunk and hook-heavy, Southern party rap.
