Performer: Chuck E. Weiss
Distributor: Alternative Dis. Alliance Notes: Personnel: Chuck E. Weiss (vocals, percussion); Rickie Lee Jones (vocals); Alvin Robinson (guitar); Mac Rebennack (keyboards); Larry Taylor (bass guitar); Freddy Stahle (drums). If Tom Waits never became a star, he might have been Chuck E. Weiss, a longtime Waits pal who has a similarly quirky sound mixing blues, rock, and left-field weirdness. Weiss was immortalized in popular culture by Rickie Lee Jones's hit "Chuck E.'s in Love," but his own music is considerably less pop-friendly. THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN is his 1981 debut album, and it possesses all the elements that would flower on his latter-day recordings, albeit in nascent form: his raw vocal style, bluesy gambol, and tendency toward street-life/shaggy-dog tales.
