As a founding member of N.W.A., Ice Cube earned his rep as one of the most controversial hip-hop artists of the late 1980s and early '90s. As such, it was hard to imagine that after a string of grimly titled solo albums (AMERIKKKA'S MOST WANTED, DEATH CERTIFICATE, THE PREDATOR, LETHAL INJECTION), Cube would successfully cross over into Hollywood as an actor, screenwriter, and director. IN THE MOVIES brings together Ice Cube's finest contributions to motion picture soundtracks over the years. Across 17 cuts, IN THE MOVIES features collaborations with Dr. Dre, Mack 10, Master P, Ice T, and Paul Oakenfold. Since Priority's 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn't the grand discography helper it could have been. It's best for the faithful fans who bought all the albums but not all the soundtracks Cube landed on or those who don't mind a little redundancy as long as they get to take a nostalgic ride back to the '90s when the hip-hop soundtrack was king. Tracks from Murder Was the Case ("Natural Born Killaz"), Boyz N the Hood ("How to Survive in South Central"), I Got the Hook Up ("Ghetto Vet"), The Players Club ("'We Be Clubbin'"), and Friday ("Friday") prove Cube was on the best of them, often with the soundtrack's key cut. The rest of the set is more archival than vital, but there's nothing here that suggests the rapper was taking the Hollywood money and running. Even the low point -- "Right Here, Right Now," the collaboration with dance producer Paul Oakenfold for the Blade 2 soundtrack -- deserves a C+, and while including the 1991 track "The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit" on the collection because it landed in the 2001 film Scary Movie 2 seems like cheating, it is an amazing cut. ~ David Jeffries Since Priority's 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn't the grand discography helper it could have been. Uncut (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] exemplary club bangers, a still-to-be-matched gangsta rap showdown summit with fellow NWA found Dre...[and] they mighty, cautionary 'Ghetto Vet'..."
A founding member of seminal West Coast gangsta rap group NWA, Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson) has managed to achieve longevity in the notoriously short-lived world of rap stardom. His earlier solo albums (LETHAL INJECTION, DEATH CERTIFICATE) are among the most uncompromising rap records ever made. Despite accusations of rampant homophobia and misogyny in his work, Ice Cube sold millions of records in the '90s, and his G-funk style proved enormously influential to subsequent rappers. Along the way, he even managed a successful career in films (FRIDAY, BARBERSHOP, BOYZ N' THE HOOD).
