Performer: Scarface
Artist: Wacko; Nina; Tanya Herron Engineer: Mike Mo Producer: John Bido; Mike Dean; Tone Capone; One Drop Scott Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Audio Mixer: Mike Dean . Recording information: Gumbo Funk Studios, Stafford, TX. Photographer: Mario Castellanos. During an era when members of rap's elite dropped albums at (at least) a one-a-year rate, Scarface took five years between the monumental 5-mic effort THE FIX (2002) and his equally compelling follow-up, M.A.D.E. (2007). The wait is well worth it, as Face is in top form, balancing anthems of relaxed gangster dominance with darker moments of pained reflection. Scarface's flow maintains the same level of restrained menace throughout, while verbose story-telling skills can still match any lyricist in the game. Featuring consistently tight production from Tone Capone, N.O. Joe, One Drop Scott, Mike Dean, Enigma, and Nottz, M.A.D.E. is another triumph from Houston's favorite son. Hip-hop veteran Scarface doesn't evolve much or waiver from his usual hardcore, minimal sound on his 2007 effort MADE, but that doesn't mean his loyal fan base shouldn't eat it up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. MADE is Scarface doing everything right, delivering those cold, hardcore rhymes over uncomplicated, soulful beats. He's inspired enough to carry this almost guest-free album on his own, and if anything's changed about his lyrics, it's that he's more willing than ever to show his maturity. On the highlight "Big Dog Status" he tells the younger generation to stop worrying about the price tag of their ride and start thinking about what it takes to stay in the game for life. "Boy Meets Girl" is an insightful story of a hood relationship gone wrong while the bleak "The Suicide Note" wonders how Face's old neighborhood slipped into hell so fast. Memorable choruses and hooks like the ones found on "Never" and "Dollar" round the album out just enough, although a couple of redundant numbers keep this from being one of his best. Oddly enough, the rapper picks up his guitar for the album but doesn't hand in a production, leaving it up to Mike Dean, Drumma Boy, and One Drop Scott to deliver the satisfying beats. A member of famed Houston gangsta rap group the Geto Boys, Scarface is one of the most respected southern MCs of all time. As a solo artist, he is by far the most successful member of the Geto Boys and is often credited with bringing southern hip-hop, and the Houston scene in particular, out of the underground and into the mainstream. In the early 2000s, Scarface claimed that he was retiring from the solo MC game, but stated that he would continue to work with the Geto Boys and record and produce for other artists.
