Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: This is a smoking compilation assembled from the Fania vaults. The label was an enormous part of the boogaloo craze, and many of its artists helped to invent this heady brew of Latin rhythms and hard soul. There are 14 tracks here totaling 52 minutes by all the biggies in the genre, with a boatload of well- and some lesser-known cuts: Pete Rodriguez's "Micaela," Larry Harlow and his Orquesta Harlow cooking it up all steamy and solid with "Bobby's Boogaloo," the Lebrn Brothers' "Boogaloo Para Mi San Juan," Johnny Rivera's "Sonny's Boogaloo," (a real groover), and Eddie Palmieri's "Ay! Con Rico," are just a few of the gems to be found here. Thankfully there are some real treasures not normally seen on these comps, like Alfredito's "Gozen Boogaloo," and El Lupo's "Boogaloopo," as well as Johnny Colon's "Boogaloo Blu's." This is a solid party in a sleeve, remastered from the Fania catalog for a hard to beat price. There are no notes to speak of, but it hardly matters; this is a great place to get started -- and keep in mind that there is a companion volume in the Signature series called Signature Fania Latin Soul; together, they are a treasure trove of killer grooves. ~ Thom Jurek
