The third album from EPMD, BUSINESS AS USUAL, is the duo's most aptly titled album ever. In 1991, when the album was originally released, EPMD was making a solid claim at becoming one of hip-hop's greatest acts. After two straight gold albums and an ever-growing fan base, BUSINESS AS USUAL could not have been released with better timing. Hard-core tracks such as "I'm Mad," "Gold Digger," and "Manslaughter" firmly entrenched EPMD at the top of the hip-hop food chain. By this time, EPMD had won over its fans by delivering over and over again the typical trunk-funk tracks that they had come to expect. Vocally, the green-eyed bandit and PMD are both on point as usual. The killer cut "Rampage" has a guest appearance from LL Cool J. BUSINESS AS USUAL is just that.
Entertainment Weekly (1/18/91) - "...EPMD raps tough." - Rating: A Q (3/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...EPMD's essential appeal is that they remain two funky, unregenerate, materialistic and occasionally misogynistic young black men from Long Island." NME (Magazine) (2/17/96, p.48) - 7 (out of 10) - "...dependable, competent product from people more creative than they were [usually] willing to demonstrate..."
Long Island-born rappers Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith formed the underground hip-hop duo EPMD in the late 1980s. Creating a sound and stance so self-assured as to seem effortless, they were among very few rap artists with the talent to pull it off without sounding lazy. EPMD did much to revitalize a flagging rap scene with UNFINISHED BUSINESS, an early outburst of controlled creative energy that sampled rock sources as well as underground dance music, working up a healthy, funk-fueled groove.
