Between 1972 and 1973, Loggins And Messina were on a roll. They released a trio of hugely successful records, culminating in the platinum FULL SAIL, which became the group's biggest seller. Much of the group's most memorable work was born of this first burst of creativity. After FULL SAIL, their records began to show the strain of success, which hastened their eventual break-up. The wide stylistic territory covered in these songs embodies the many musical styles that Loggins And Messina seemed to effortlessly combine into their work. Over their six-album career, they returned to the '50s-style bubblegum of "Your Mama Don't Dance" and "My Music," as well as the aching balladry of "Danny's Song." They would also go further in the direction of the sophisticated jazz-pop of "Angry Eyes." Elsewhere, the Calypso-flavored "Vahevela" stands out as a gem in the group's catalog. Twice per record they stretched out on Jim Messina's extended, medley-style compositions. The medley on SITTIN' IN, which finishes with "Peace of Mind," is arguably the best of these wonderfully constructed musical trilogies.
