DEUCES--his second release in under five months and his 17th for Blue Hat Records--finds the feisty fiddler joining forces with some heavies from the worlds of Nashville, rock, and pop in a series of rave-ups that accurately reflect his career as a country boy among rockers, and a seriously jacked-up hillbilly among country players. If you're playing the devil's instrument, it shouldn't be any other way. While the bevy of big names suggests the respect Daniels gets across genre lines throughout the music industry, DEUCES is hardly a retrospective tribute, and it kicks up as much dust as any release in his catalog. He digs into the Carter-Cash classic "Jackson" with Gretchen Wilson, rips through perhaps the best cover version of Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" ever (with Earl, Gary, and Randy Scruggs), and refuses that gentle goodnight hand in hand with Brenda Lee on "Let It Be Me." Add Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, and many others to the list of conspirators. DEUCES is a great late addition to the Daniels catalog and speaks to his legacy as one of the finest sidemen in the nebulous genre where rock & roll, rhythm & blues, and country become one and the same. Deuces is a clever title for a collection of duets between Charlie Daniels and a bunch of other country stars, ranging from Gretchen Wilson to Vince Gill, Dolly Parton to Brad Paisley. Although the song selection may be a little bit too predictable -- he likely never needs to cut another version of "Long Haired Country Boy," no matter how good that version might be -- Deuces isn't about the songs, it's about the performances, and there's a bunch of great ones here, with the CDB always sounding in top form, sometimes really catching fire with their guests, as when they dig into "Evangeline" with the Del McCoury Band, trade riffs with Paisley on "Jammin' for Stevie," and lay into "God Save Us All from Religion" with Marty Stuart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Among the first to find commercial success in the 1970s with a fusion of country and southern rock, Charlie Daniels was the forerunner to Hank Williams Jr., Steve Earle, and other unabashedly redneck stars. Daniels is a talented musician whose pre-stardom days in the 1960s included stints with Bob Dylan and Earl Scruggs. His "Devil Went Down to Georgia" is a modern-day standard.
