Performer: Christian Death
Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Christian Death: Valor (vocals, guitars, mandolin, violin, synthesizer, drums, percussion); Maitri (vocals, bass guitar, percussion); Nate Hassan (drums). Additional personnel: Coyote, Juan "Punchy" Gonzales (guitar); Tiia (organ). With 2007's AMERICAN INQUISITION, Christian Death offers up its first new studio album since 2000's BORN AGAIN ANTI CHRISTIAN. Recorded by the incarnation of the goth band that features the vocalist couple of Valor and Maitri, this outing has nothing to do with the original lineup of the Los Angeles-based ensemble, which included renowned singer Rozz Williams (who committed suicide in 1998) and guitarist Rikk Agnew. While those loyal to the Williams/Agnew version of the group will likely avoid this group, those inclined towards Wagnerian metal may appreciate the act, which presents its dramatic aesthetic most effectively on the lumbering "Stop Bleeding on Me."
Emerging from the early-1980s L.A.-based Death Rock scene, Christian Death became one of the defining bands of the Goth movement. With a fairly basic punk/new wave sound; nihilistic, sacrilegious lyrics; and a dark and gloomy aesthetic, Christian Death inspired legions of depressed teenagers to turn to the proverbial dark side. Although the band went through several confusing line-up changes and were initially successful only in Europe, their influence can be seen far and wide in the U.S. and abroad.
