Performer: Original Soundtrack
Producer: Cindy Cooper Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: A companion piece to the wildly popular GUITAR HERO 3 video game, this collection features six-string-driven heavy rock/metal songs that participants can "play" along with in classic air-guitar fashion. Highlights of the compilation include Sonic Youth's surging "Kool Thing" and Queens of the Stone Age's raucous "3's & 7's," tracks that will have listeners riffing and headbanging until the sun comes up. It seems odd to have a soundtrack to a music-oriented video game that's built on replicas of original recordings, but when something in pop culture turns into a true phenomenon, a soundtrack isn't far behind. And so, the release of a CD soundtrack to the hotly anticipated Guitar Hero 3 emerged, but the soundtrack seems a bit like an afterthought compared to the actual game, a seemingly random collection of ten highlights from the game -- including Smashing Pumpkins' "Cherub Rock," Queens of the Stone Age's "3's & 7's," Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" -- which are fine enough listening on their own, but hardly extensive enough to satisfy the hardcore gamers who want a full soundtrack of the game. Those gamers are supposed to be satisfied by the expansion pack included on this CD, which will give players a code to download three exclusive songs to be used in the game: new cuts by AFI, Flyleaf, and a Marilyn Manson remix. Not exactly the most enticing batch of tunes ever, but something is better than nothing, yet as these songs aren't the best, and the basic soundtrack feels a bit skimpy, Guitar Hero 3 as a soundtrack is decidedly more underwhelming than the game. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine It seems odd to have a soundtrack to a music-oriented video game that's built on replicas of original recordings, but when something in pop culture turns into a true phenomenon, a soundtrack isn't far behind.
