Performer: Spirit
Distributor: Infinity Entertainment Gr Notes: One of the Woodstock generation's best and most underappreciated psychedelic bands, Spirit combined Randy California's innovative guitar virtuosity with interesting folk- and jazz-inflected songs and a true spirit of experimentation. This three-CD set offers a long, lingering look at the band in their heyday, via two discs of live tracks and one disc of unreleased studio work, all from 1974. Among the gems in the studio tracks are a spirited (no pun intended) cover of Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street" and the blistering original "Wake Up America."
Spirit was one of the most talented and most overlooked groups of the 1960s West Coast psychedelic crop. They utilized jazz influences, folk-rock song structures, and the visionary, mind-bending guitar work of Randy California to create some of the most unique, intriguing music of the era.
