Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: A surprisingly varied 15-track collection of modern blues performances, many of them done live, this first volume in Fuel 2000's Blues Power series includes a concert version by Elmore James of his majestic "The Sky Is Crying," a full-throated and horn section-abetted "Crossroads" from Homesick James, Ike Turner's sax-fueled "You Don't Love Me," Betty Everett (singing in front of the Willie Dixon Band) delivering a kind of pop blues on "Tell Me Darling," and Sonny Terry's back porch and down-home solo harmonica turn on "Whoopin' the Blues." It's hardly a comprehensive history of modern blues, but this set has enough little surprises to make it worth checking out. ~ Steve Leggett
