Death Row's Snoop Doggy Dogg Greatest Hits compiles the highlights of the rapper's two albums for the label -- Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather -- along with some miscellany such as remixes. The collection is more of an odds-and-ends collection than a best-of collection. ~ Jason Birchmeier Death Row's Snoop Doggy Dogg Greatest Hits compiles the highlights of the rapper's two albums for the label -- Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather -- along with some miscellany such as remixes. Since the miscellany is inessential and the selections aren't well selected, it's better to go with those two studio albums. Or just Doggystyle, as that's a flat-out classic album from beginning to end, whereas Tha Doggfather is rather poor in comparison. In any event, at the least Death Row could have compiled Snoop's best songs for this compilation. Instead, the label has assembled a hodgepodge that falls far short of the mark -- it's more of an odds-and-ends collection than a best-of, arguably. ~ Jason Birchmeier Snoop Dogg is one of hip-hop's most distinctive and original voices, and DEATH ROW'S GREATEST HITS is a definitive collection of his earliest, arguably most vital work for the titular label. Aided by the funky west coast production of Dr. Dre, Snoop emerged in the early '90s as a different kind of gangsta. He didn't shy away from drugs, violence, or any of the other elements of the thug life, but his smooth, relaxed, almost jazzy delivery very nearly transcended his gritty subject matter. From the manifesto "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang," the song that introduced him to millions of fans, to the ominous crime scenario of "Murder Was the Case," Snoop's unique, laconic style delights and intrigues, regardless of the darkness of the theme. This is a crucial document of hip-hop history.
Mixmag (1/01, p.61) - 3 out of 5 - "...Proper G funk from the coolest misogynist since Sid the Sexist..."
Snoop Doggy Dogg ensured his place in rap history by providing the perfect vocal complement to Dr. Dre's mellow, ominous, West Coast G-funk sound. His distinctively lazy singsong and soft-spoken drawl was first heard on Dre's title cut from the DEEP COVER soundtrack in 1991. Snoop's appearances on Dre's solo album THE CHRONIC shortly thereafter propelled him to almost overnight stardom, and his albums DOGGYSTYLE and the DOGGFATHER both hit the top of the charts. Despite a much-publicized murder trial, and a falling out with Death Row Record's CEO Suge Knight, Snoop Dogg ascended to the highest echelon of rap royalty, and through shrewd marketing, brilliant collaborations, and his smooth pimp persona, he has kept his crown well into the 21st century.
