On three blues, an original based on the chord changes of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Lester Leaps In," the four tenors battle it out and the results are quite exciting. One of the great sax pugilists, tenor man Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis was featured as a star soloist in many of the NYC big bands of the '40s and '50s, most notably Count Basie's. His work with Shirley Scott virtually defined the blustery tenor/bluesy organ combo sound, and a later dual-tenor outfit co-led with Johnny Griffin gave rise to uncompromised excitement and sonic virility at every turn.
