In the same year that he and label-mate Don Cannon became fall guys for the mixtape hustle, DJ Drama dropped his first official album under the GANGSTA GRILLZ moniker. Bringing together MCs and producers representing all coasts and virtually all hip-hop subgenres, GANGSTA GRILLZ: THE ALBUM features contributions from Busta Rhymes, T.I., Lil Jon, Chamillionaire, Diddy, Young Jeezy, La the Darkman, the Clipse, Pharrell Williams, Jadakiss, Tony Yayo, Jim Jones, Slim Thug, Eightball & MJG, Outkast, and Nelly, among many, many others.
Born Tyree Cinque Simmons in Philadelphia in 1978, DJ Drama assumed his street name in the mid-1990s. After relocating to Georgia to attend Clark University, Drama linked up with producer DJ Don Cannon to form Aphilliates Music Group, releasing neo-soul mixtapes with the title AUTOMATIC RELAXATION. Drama's next series, GANGSTA GRILLZ, boasted a tougher, more street-level sound and featured such prominent "host" artists as T.I., Young Jeezy, and Lil' Wayne. In 2007, police raided Aphilliates' headquarters and arrested Drama and Don Cannon on allegations of racketeering. That same year, Drama released his debut major label collection, GANGSTA GRILLZ: THE ALBUM, which featured OutKast and Pharrell. Undaunted by the law, GANGSTA GRILLZ 2: THE ALBUM (THE MIXTAPE PRESIDENT) followed soon after.
