Focusing on the early years of the New Orleans-based label, the collection 10 YEARS OF BLING VOL. 1 brings together a slew of late-1990s and early -2000s recordings from Lil Wayne, B.G., and Big Tymers. Much of the sonic cohesion comes courtesy of the beatwork from superproducer Mannie Fresh whose combination of zooming synthesizers and frenetic, rapid-fire drum tracks provided a foundation for the blossoming Nawlins hip-hop movement. Ostensibly a tenth-anniversary compilation of Cash Money Records hits, 10 Years of Bling, Vol. 1 is actually a slight collection of Big Tymer and Lil Wayne highlights, with B.G.'s anthemic "Bling, Bling" featured for good measure. The problem is, Cash Money was home to not only the Big Tymers and Lil Wayne, but also Juvenile and the Hot Boys. Perhaps Juvenile and the Hot Boys will show up on a second volume; here's hoping they do, because they made some of Cash Money's best music. For this reason, their omission here is inexcusable (how can a Cash Money best-of not include "Back That Azz Up" and "Ha," or "I Need a Hot Girl" and "Drop It Like It's Hot"?!) and makes 10 Years of Bling, Vol. 1 difficult to recommend. Granted, there are some wise inclusions, most notably the aforementioned "Bling, Bling" by B.G.; the early Lil Wayne hits "Tha Block Is Hot" and "Get Off the Corner," and the latter-day Big Tymer hits "Still Fly," "Get Your Roll On," and "Oh Yeah." But it's what's not here that's the most notable characteristic of 10 Years of Bling, Vol. 1. ~ Jason Birchmeier Ostensibly a tenth-anniversary compilation of Cash Money Records hits, 10 Years of Bling, Vol. 1 is actually a slight collection of Big Tymer and Lil Wayne highlights, with B.G.'s anthemic "Bling, Bling" featured for good measure.
