Notes: Author: Quincy Jones. This 16-track collection presents a top-notch selection of songs by artists who won country Grammy awards between 1990 and 2006. While some tunes reside in traditional/folk territory (see June Carter Cash's soulful "Keep On the Sunny Side" and Alison Krauss & Union Station's gentle "Looking in the Eyes of Love"), most of the tracks on the compilation are of the more pop-tinged variety, as exemplified by Leann Rimes's lilting "Blue" and Tim McGraw's thoughtful "Live Like You Were Dying." A collection of 16 recent Grammy winners in what has come to be known as the contemporary country category, this set includes Dwight Yoakam's wry "Ain't That Lonely Yet," the Mavericks' vulnerable "Here Comes the Rain," Gretchen Wilson's spunky declaration "Redneck Woman," and LeAnn Rimes' still haunting "Blue," among other hits, and while it hardly makes for a complete survey of recent country offerings, it does make for a pleasant listen. ~ Steve Leggett
