Distributor: IDN Distribution Notes: Everything about Howlin' Wolf was larger than life; his voice, his songs, his image, even his physical girth. As an avatar of vintage Chicago blues, Wolf was second only to his constant rival, Muddy Waters. BLUES BIOGRAPHY offers 18 examples of the Wolf at his best, including some of his signature tunes ("Wang Dang Doodle," "Killing Floor," "Built for Comfort"). The angular, incisive guitar lines (often played by Hubert Sumlin), the forceful tunes (usually written by Willie Dixon), and, most of all, the gigantic sandpaper wail (100% Wolf) on these tracks combine to place them among the finest blues recordings of their era.
Charles "Howlin' Wolf" Burnett's menacing, guttural vocals are among the blues' most distinctive sounds. His Chess recordings, including "Smokestack Lightning" and "Little Red Rooster," are landmarks which altered the flow of blues history and helped pave the way for rock 'n' roll. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Howlin' Wolf never really faded away (only to be rediscovered), but continued to tour constantly almost up until his death in 1976 of natural causes. Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Sonny Boy Williamson make up the Holy Trinity of Chicago blues, an electrified, mid-20th century urban genre that profoundly influenced the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and countless others.
