Performer: Fairport Convention
Engineer: Rob Braviner Producer: Dave Pegg Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel: Simon Nicol (vocals, acoustic guitar); Martin Allcock (vocals, electric guitar, keyboards); Jerry Donahue (vocals, electric guitar); Chris Leslie, Dave Pegg, Dave Swarbrick (vocals, fiddle); Bruce Rowland (vocals, washboard, tambourine); Robert Plant, Ashley Hutchings, Julianne Regan (vocals); Dave Mattacks (keyboards, drums); Ric Sanders (keyboards); Geoffrey Hughes (bodhran). Recording information: Cropredy Festival (08/14/1992-08/15/1992). Editor: Tim Matyear. Photographer: John Bright. Arrangers: Dave Swarbrick; Martin Allcock; Ric Sanders. Recorded live to DAT at a performance that had fiddler Chris Leslie filling in for Ric Sanders, who had injured himself in an accident involving a plate glass window (Sanders was able to provide keyboards, however), 25th Anniversary Concert was a festive outing with numerous guests (including Fairport founders Richard Thompson and Ashley Hutchings). The two-disc set ranges from the sublime (a ferocious, Boiled in Lead-style take of "Matty Groves") to the slightly surreal ("John Barleycorn" with the lyrics screwed up). The sound is unfortunately too bright and metallic, and the mix, taken from the soundboard, is sometimes atrocious, but trimming the highs helps with the former, while the latter, in the spirit of live shows, can simply be ignored. Not the best example of Fairport, but highly entertaining. The definitive British folk-rock band, Fairport Convention took the traditional music of England and injected it with electricity and rock energy, sparking a whole musical movement in the U.K. in the late 1960s and early '70s. The late-'60s incarnation of the band was bursting with talent, including singer Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson, both of whom went on to lauded solo careers. Even after Denny and Thompson's departures, though, Fairport never slowed down. Through numerous personnel changes, they soldiered on for decades with their singular brand of folk-rock, becoming the Grand Old Men of the genre.
