WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAYS is the original title of the album that was released in the U.S. as FAIRPORT CONVENTION. Composer: Sandy Denny. Personnel: Sandy Denny (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Ian Matthews (vocals); Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol (guitar); Tyger Hutchings (bass guitar); Martin Lamble (drums). Recording information: St. Peter's, Westbourne Grove, England. Photographer: Richard Bennett Zeff. Arranger: Fairport Convention. An album that revels in an embarrassment of influences which the band bind, making their own. This was the Fairport that ran with the psychedelic underground, flexing their muscles, a slumbering entity about to wake. This was their beatnik phase, producing such evergreens as Sandy Denny's beautiful 'Fotheringay', the first tangible examples of electrified trad in 'Nottamun Town' and 'She Moves Through The Fair' - neither song, incidentally, British. More significantly, Richard Thompson began to move in his own mysterious way, gifting 'Meet On The Ledge' which has since become their signature. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life and this collection adroitly exploits just that.
Uncut (5/03, p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...[With] perennial classics..."
NME (Magazine) (11/6/99, p.38) - 8 out of 10 - "...provides a neat summary of the career of the sporadically brilliant Fairport Convention..."
The definitive British folk-rock band, Fairport Convention took the traditional music of England and injected it with electricity and rock energy, sparking a whole musical movement in the U.K. in the late 1960s and early '70s. The late-'60s incarnation of the band was bursting with talent, including singer Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson, both of whom went on to lauded solo careers. Even after Denny and Thompson's departures, though, Fairport never slowed down. Through numerous personnel changes, they soldiered on for decades with their singular brand of folk-rock, becoming the Grand Old Men of the genre.
