Performer: Original Soundtrack/Nick Cave
Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Personnel: Martin Casey, Luke Cave, Gerard McMann, Jim Sclavunos, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis. For the soundtrack to his moody 2007 Western, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, New Zealand-based writer/director Andrew Dominik enlisted revered Australian troubadour Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds/Grinderman bandmate and Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis to craft an elegant and brooding score. Consisting primarily of Cave's delicate piano lines and Ellis's emotive violin playing, these instrumental pieces range from chiming beauty ("Song for Jesse") to somber resignation ("What Must Be Done") to dark urgency ("What Happens Next"). A companion piece of sorts to the duo's work on THE PROPOSITION, another grisly oater (which was written by Cave himself), this soundtrack lacks Cave's singing voice, but is instinctively in line with his shadowy musical sensibility, making it ideal for devoted Bad Seeds fans.
Uncut (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] rich, heady musical moonshine, at its best on the twinkling spooked piano of 'Song For Jesse'."
The Wire (p.55) - "Cave and Ellis present both the Australian outback and America's lawless frontiers as similarly lonely places, Ellis's Roma-influenced violin weaving around bare, minor-key melodies..."
