Sometimes the concept is simply to introduce some good music with a theme aimed at making it palatable to a wide audience. And, as the world needs something to help it relax from time to time, the notion of pre-bedtime jazz is a welcome one. This set presents the classy piano of jazz veteran Marian McPartland; the soothing, blues-flavored burr of electric guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Ponder; the plump, breathy, blues-saturated sax of Willis Jackson (ably assisted by the crafty guitar of six-string master Pat Martino); and the tender ballad tones of Woody Shaw, one of the finest post-Miles Davis trumpeters.
