Notes: It's impossible at 17 tracks for a single-disc collection to comprehensively cover the career of the Andrews Sisters, who charted an astounding 113 singles during their Decca years from the late '30s through the early '50s, sold millions of records, and appeared in nearly 20 movies. This release hits the obvious high points, but it only scratches the surface of the legacy of this dynamic group, whose upbeat material and tight, well-arranged harmonies, along with a tendency to select rhythmic dance songs from several cultures (one of their best covers was a version of Lord Invader's calypso classic "Rum and Coca-Cola," included here), mark the Andrews Sisters as pop modernists. ~ Steve Leggett
Modeling their career after the Boswell Sisters, an earlier singing family act, Minnesota's Andrews Sisters--Patty, Maxine, and LaVerne--were one of the most popular vocal groups of the 1940s and are synonymous with America's cultural zeitgeist during World War II. Adept at swing, jazz, and pop, the Andrews Sisters' talents extended beyond the recording studio and concert halls to the big screen, as they appeared in numerous Hollywood features during their career. Tireless supporters of the war effort, the trio were well known for their work with the USO, entertaining troops throughout the 1940s. The sisters performed, as a group and solo, until LaVerne's death in 1967.
