Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: One of the seminal funk acts of the 1970s, Ohio Players laid down hard, no-nonsense funk characterized by popping basslines, punchy horns, and the distinctive nasal vocals of Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner. GOLD succinctly summarized the Players' finest moments in 11 tracks of vintage groove, featuring smooth soul ballads ("I Want to Be Free"), uptempo disco jams ("Feel the Beat (Everybody Disco)"), and straight-up funk classics ("Fire," "Love Rollercoaster"). GOLD is a sure-fire bet for both old school funkateers and new school groove seekers.
One of the most important and successful funk bands of the '70s, the Ohio Players made effective use of aggressive horns and big, butt-shakin' bass lines. The group produced a wide variety of great, sex-savvy soul music, many of their biggest hits were sex-related novelties. Unfortunately, the Ohio Players are now remembered almost as much for their erotic cover art as for their music.
