Performer: Del tha Funkee Homosapien
Producer: K.U.; Del Tha Funkee Homosapien; J-Zone; Opio Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Personnel: Zac Hendrix, Zac Hendrix (scratches). Audio Mixer: Matt Kelly. Having first hit the scene under the tutelage of Ice Cube and the Bomb Squad in the early 1990s, Del the Funky Homosapien has been through his share of styles over the years. After eight years without a solo release, the Oakland underground rap icon returned in 2008 with ELEVENTH HOUR--a lavish yet incredibly precise full-length effort on Definitive Jux records. Featuring a Funky Homosapien flow that is as bombastic as ever, ELEVENTH HOUR is guaranteed to keep listeners at full attention throughout its 13 cuts. Largely self-produced, ELEVENTH HOUR includes supplemental beatwork from KU, Opio, and J-Zone, as well as a guest appearance by Ladybug Mecca of Digable Planets.
Entertainment Weekly - "The retro kick works remarkably well: Those simple beats give us room to appreciate his nimble, word-stuffed flow." -- Grade: B+
Blender (Magazine) (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Del always exudes confidence and never swaggers....Just as he claims, his calm articulation and clean beats never waver..."
While Del Tha Funkee Homosapien was first introduced to the world as Ice Cube's cousin, the distinctively voiced Oakland rapper swiftly ducked out of that shadow. Although only 19 at the time of his 1991 debut, I WISH MY BROTHER GEORGE WAS HERE, Del possessed a uniquely mature worldview, whether bemoaning lazy friends, pop rappers, public transportation, or fakers (as on hit single "Mistadobolina"). Though Del's solo career waned somewhat following the harder-edged followup, NO NEED FOR ALARM, he would become a sought-after collaborator, releasing critically lauded, highly eclectic records as a member of Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030, and Gorillaz. In 2008, Del reemerged solo on the Definitive Jux label with ELEVENTH HOUR, his first new album in eight years.
