Performer: Professor Longhair
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel includes: Professor Longhair (vocals, piano); Alfred Roberts (congas). Recorded live at The New London Theatre, London, England in 1978. New Orleans piano legend Professor Longhair traveled to London in 1978 to play the concert heard here, letting another culture experience a living American musical tradition first-hand. The 30th anniversary release of that performance only serves to remind the world how rich, nuanced, and visceral Longhair's piano and vocal style were. Accompanied by nothing more than his own piano and a conga player he moves through classics like "Big Chief," "Tipitina," and others like a man who lives and breathes the spirit of New Orleans R&B.
New Orleans pianist Henry Byrd, known to the world at large as Professor Longhair, or just "'Fess," was a vital bridge between jazz, rock & roll, and rhythm & blues in the middle of the 20th century. An interpreter, stylist, and innovator, he's a prime figure in New Orleans's rich musical history. His whooping vocal style and percussive, highly rhythmic piano playing are hallmarks of the New Orleans R&B style, and many of his songs ("Big Chief," "Tipitina") have become standards of the genre.
