Madacy Entertainment has basically compiled three different recordings in a single box, all of which have been released before. Disc one is simply Janis Joplin Live, disc two is the 1982 release Janis, and disc three is Kozmic Blues with a few Woodstock outtakes added as bonus material. In other words, if you've been a faithful follower of Joplin's through all the repackages, best-ofs, and compilations, you already have everything here in one form or another, and there is no argument for purchasing this whatsoever. If you're a novice wondering where to start with the late Joplin's somewhat daunting catalog, there are better places to start, such as Cheap Thrills. ~ Thom Jurek
Texas-born blues-rock singer Janis Joplin's sadly short career saw her change from coffehouse folkie into a feminist blues icon for the psychedelic '60s generation, all in the space of four years. Though she started out as a solo singer, it was as the frontwoman for Bay Area acid-blues-rockers Big Brother & The Holding Company that she skyrocketed to fame, her outsized voice, image, and personality making her natural star material. Eventually, she proved too big for the confines of Big Brother and went the solo route. A breakthrough album was recorded just before her early death, adding a tragic aura to her small body of work.
