Notes: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, released a couple months before 2008's holiday, is the second collaboration between smoothly neurotic superstar Lil Wayne and his adoptive father, Birdman. The attitude throughout is that of a casual mixtape or a drunken New Orleans barbecue. The production is mostly sparse and often inventive ("Burn This City" samples Franz Ferdinand through a purple haze). Wayne's flows languidly pop in with their usual mix of the raw choruses and attention-grabbing moments of absurd wit, while Birdman's growl bowls over everything in its path. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY is a sleek collaboration between two MCs who care a great deal for one another.

Along with fellow Cash Money Click labelmate Juvenile, Lil Wayne is one of the most important MCs in the unfairly overlooked early 21st-century New Orleans rap scene. Blunt ghetto narratives about the hustler's life and woozy nearly psychedelic free associations fill Wayne's albums, but it's his allegiance to his home town that makes him a unique and forceful presence in hip-hop, and an important reminder that there is more to the Big Easy than Fats Domino and Dr. John.
