BLUE PRINCE finds Catherine leaning more toward the fusion that characterized his early work, though the material (mostly Catherine originals) also shows strong elements of traditional bop. The supporting musicians are fine, especially the solo work from trumpeter Bert Joris. On MEETING COLORS Catherine is joined by a full orchestra, but jazz purists and string-a-phobes needn't fear. MEETING COLORS traffics in big band swing mode with plenty of cool bop overtones with plenty of space for Catherine's fleet-fingered tricks. Both are excellent examples of the man's artistry.
