Arguably the most popular and influential Jamaican artist since Bob Marley, Buju Banton first gained international exposure riding the crest of the early-`90s dancehall explosion. Tiring of that scene's reliance on typically "slack" lyrics concerning graphic sexuality and gun-talk, he soon adopted a roots-influenced return to live instrumentation and Rastafarian themes. In a move to expand his artistic reach as well as develop new artists, Buju later set up his own label, Gargamel. JAMROCK CLASSICS VOL. 1 is a selection of classic riddims voiced by rising and established stars of dancehall reggae. Featuring Buju's own blazing anthem "Cowboys," and nine other hits, this collection breathes new life into classics like "Stalag 17" and "Police & Thieves."
