Performer: Hüsker Dü
Distributor: Ryko Distribution Notes: THE LIVING END was recorded live during the Husker Du's last tour in October 1987. Husker Du: Bob Mould (guitar, vocals); Greg Norton (bass, vocals); Grant Hart (drums, vocals). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Recorded in 1987 but not released until '94, THE LIVING END features performances from Husker Du's final tour, capturing the pioneering Minneapolis-based alternative-rock act just before its demise. Highlights of the concert album include an emotive take on "Hardly Getting Over It" and a fast, loose version of the Ramones' "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," both of which showcase Bob Mould and Grant Hart's vocal simpatico.
Option (8/94, p.105) - "...Husker Du was one of the few truly great rock bands....The Huskers had it all: seductive pop melodies, ideally balanced lead and background vocals, scorching guitar, booming bass, crashing drums, dynamics, and a handful of perfect songs..."
NME (Magazine) (5/7/94, p.40) - 8 - Excellent - "...the classic Brit-beat blueprints of the `60s with hardcore's existentialist fury, Husker Du eventually became the purest power pop marriage. To see them at their peak was to believe a band could fly..."
In a relatively brief career that began in 1979 and ended in 1987, Husker Du left an indelible mark, making a great impact on subsequent rock trends including grunge, alternative, and emo. The Minneapolis trio had its first major success on the fabled SST label, playing thrashy hardcore. Soon the band began to leaven its fierce attack with melodic hooks and harmony vocals. Through uncompromising records and relentless touring, Husker Du earned critical plaudits and built up a reputation among rock aficionados before its acrimonious breakup. Singer Bob Mould went on to success with Sugar and as a solo artist.
