Controversial Headlines aka Champion Sound, Pt. 2 - (featuring Horror City/Jean Grae)
To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Jean Grae
Artist: Talib Kweli; Horror City Engineer: Iron Lyon Producer: DJ Spinna; Ruddy Rock; J. Cardim Distributor: Redeye Music Distribution Notes: Recording information: The Dojo, Brooklyn, NY. After the New York underground outfit Natural Resource split in the late 1990s, Jean Grae took a few years to emerge and receive the proper industry recognition. Still, a substantial number of her solo recordings from the early 2000s failed to make it onto any LP. THE ORCHESTRAL FILES brings together the best of these cuts, showcasing Jean's talents for wordy, intricate rhymes. This deluxe edition features a bonus CD that includes a miscellaneous collection of Jean's many collaborations and appearances alongside such artists as Talib Kweli, Guru, and Da Beatminerz.
Born in South Africa to two jazz musician parents, Tisidi Ibrahim began her music career in mid-1990s New York's vibrant underground hip-hop scene. Under the rap name What? What?, she was part of the Brooklyn-based label Makin' Records, releasing a string of singles as one half of Natural Resource and producing tracks under the alias Run Run Shaw. After Natural Resource's breakup in 1998, Ibrahim took the name Jean Grae, releasing her solo debut, ATTACK OF THE ATTACKING THINGS, in 2002. Acclaimed for her intricate wordplay and unflinching approach to deeper subject matter, Jean Grae has raised the bar for female MCs without resorting to sexualized content and remains one of hip-hop's most talented lyricists.
