On their third studio album, 2008's FORGIVEN, Los Lonely Boys offer up another round of their signature "Texican" style. This time, however, the Garza brothers--Henry (guitar), Jojo (bass), and Ringo (drums)--play down the Latino influences, and opt for more straight pop, rock, and blues leanings. Aided by New Orleans keyboard legend Dr. John and producer Steve Jordan (John Mayer, Robert Cray), the Garzas ease into a radio-friendly set that includes the dreamy title track, the happily romantic "Staying with Me," and the passionate "You Can't See the Light," which features Henry's searing six-string work. Other high points include the Lenny Kravitz-like tunes "Heart Won't Tell a Lie" and "Make It Better," which capture the trio's simmering live energy. While some LLB diehards might miss the Texan group's vintage Santana-isms, ultimately the ensemble's catchy melodies make for an accessible album that should appeal to a wide array of pop/rock fans.
Los Lonely Boys--three Mexican-American brothers born and raised in Texas--brought the concept of Tex-Mex music into the 21st century. Raised on the sounds of Texas rock, blues, and country, the virtuoso family band is also heavily indebted to both Willie Nelson (an early champion) and their father, Ringo Garza Sr., leader of the famed norteno act the Falcones. Los Lonely Boys' amiable mix of fiery guitar rock and smooth pop melodies earned them a Grammy in 2005. The trio released its sophomore album, SACRED, in 2006.
