Performer: Simon & Garfunkel
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals). Producers include: Tom Wilson, Bob Johnston, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Roy Halee. Compilation producer: Bob Irwin. Includes liner notes by David Halberstam. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The Best of Simon & Garfunkel supersedes Greatest Hits as the best compilation of the duo, with more tracks (20 compared to Greatest Hits' 14). Among the new additions are some notable hits: "Hazy Shade of Winter," "At the Zoo," "Fakin' It" (in its "Mono Single Version," for what that's worth), "The Dangling Conversation," and the 1975 reunion "My Home Town." Includes the A-sides of all 16 S&G singles to make the Billboard charts, as well as three B-sides and one album cut. The only number lost from the Greatest Hits set is "Kathy's Song." ~ Richie Unterberger Following the critically and commercially successful 1997 OLD FRIENDS box set, Legacy released a single-disc Simon & Garfunkel best-of collection. Simon & Garfunkel's are arguably the most successful duo in pop history, and this set features all of their charting songs. The disc is also an improvement on their 1972 GREATEST HITS release, with nearly twice the number of tracks, remastered sound, and wonderful liner notes by David Halberstram. "The Sound of Silence," an anthem for a bygone era, leads into the reflective "Homeward Bound." Though it may not have climbed as high on the charts, the haunting and string-laden "The Dangling Conversation" is another standout track. "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" and "At the Zoo" are the two greatest metropolitan Sunday songs in history. Also included are "The Boxer" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" two bona fide classics, as well as the non-hit single "Song for the Asking." The album concludes with "My Little Town," from the duo's 1975 reunion. Simon & Garfunkel's influence is immeasurable, and each generation that follows gets turned on to the artists formerly known as Tom and Jerry. Whether you are a first-time listener, or rediscovering these amazing songs, this disc is a worthy purchase.
Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.93) - "...This very nicely sequenced package not only offers a chronological tour through the duo's recording legacy, but makes a great listen in its own right..."
New Yorkers Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel began as a late-1950s doo-wop group called Tom & Jerry. In the '60s, they turned to folk, with an extended stay in London bringing a heavy British folk influence into Simon's work. When a rock band was overdubbed onto the original acoustic version of their single "The Sounds of Silence," a hit resulted and helped further the then-nascent folk-rock movement. The pair's subsequent albums produced a long stream of catchy-but-brainy hit singles and also explored various musical styles, foreshadowing the eclecticism of Simon's solo career. Although the duo split after 1970's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, they have reunited for performances on a few occasions, including a tour in 2003.
