Performer: Augustus Pablo
Distributor: Koch (Distributor USA) Notes: Augustus Pablo (born Horace Swaby) is one of the most influential figures in Jamaican music. His early career as an instrumentalist elevated the lowly status of the melodica to an integral part in several key reggae releases of the `70s. Later, his distinctive innovations in dub production established the so-called "Far East" sound--with its heavy reliance on minor chords--as the de-facto roots style for many years. THE ROCKERS STORY, a comprehensive four-CD compendium, covers several of the artist's most productive years. From blissful instrumentals and plaintive roots rockers, to psychedelic dub rinses, it's collected here in all of its sublime, mystical glory.
Spin (p.94) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he definitive deep-water cruise through all things Pablo..."
The Wire (p.63) - "[A] wonderful collection....Pablo has had an influence unrivaled by any other reggae artist save Lee Perry and King Tubby, with whom he creates the unquestionable dub trinity."
Dub producer Augustus Pablo began his career in earnest in the early '70s, cutting instrumental renditions of classic Studio One rhythms which featured his melodica and clavinet playing. Leaning heavily on minor chords, his music resonated with a spooky, exotic flavor that came to be known as his "Far East Sound." Pablo fully came into his own as a producer during the mid-'70s "rockers" phase, working with singers such as Junior Delgado and Jacob Miller.
